Outdoor or indoor stone makes your home's exterior look aesthetically pleasing while providing a clean look for your patio or kitchen. Whether it's the simple job of sweeping the patio to scrubbing the stone by hand, a bit of elbow grease is necessary to keep your home and patio area looking clean for the neighborhood party or family picnic.

Instructions

1 Seal the stone with a sealant is based on the density of the stone and the type of material (polished, natural, or hone) you're using. By sealing the stone you're protecting your outdoor surface for years to come.

2 Wipe up spills and daily messes using pH-balanced cleaners for daily cleaning. A mild dish washing liquid works well on stone surfaces.Rinse the stone tile and grout to remove any remaining cleaner. Take a bristle brush to loosen debris from the stone grout. Rinse once to remove any residue.

3 Perform heavy duty cleaning on your patio stone. Use pH-balanced cleaners with a soft bristle brush. Use a small amount of cleaner on a hidden area of stone to evaluate how it will react to the cleaner. If this cleaner doesn't work well, use a high alkaline "deep clean" cleaner. These cleaners are available at home improvement stores.

4 Use a floor buffer to clean tile indoors. The floor buffer can be rented at an equipment rental company or home improvement store. You'll need cleaner that is deposited into the equipment. This cleaner is available at the rental company or home improvement store you're renting from. After buffing the stone patio or walkway, rinse the area to remove any excess cleaner or debris.

5. Hand scrub or mop the stone using a hand brush and an acid-based cleaning solution mixed with water to scrub off dirt and grime. The cleaner can be scrubbed or mopped depending on the level of dirt on the stone. Wipe down with a towel when finished scrubbing or mopping.

6. Remove stains from stone or marble. Poultice is an adhesive that comes in a paste form. It's applied to the surface of the stone where a stain is located. Apply a piece of plastic over the stain and the poultice. Let sit for 24 to 28 hours as the poultice will draw the stain away from the stone. Wipe the poultice solution off and repeat as necessary.
