Refin took home the overall top prize, impressing the judging committee with it simple but compelling communication that its products are exceptionally sustainable. The space was designed by Bolognese architect Mario Cermasi, and to telegraph the eco-responsible characteristics of Refin’s porcelain tiles, which feature 40% recycled content, he created an open environment defined by wall panels comprised of pressed wood chips with tile insets forming a bold geometric pattern. Other natural materials were incorporated to help dramatize the message, including simple ottoman seating constructed of cardboard and a centerpiece artwork of bamboo shoots arising from a sunken pit of broken unfired porcelain fragments.
Yellow Mountain StoneWorks, Inc., a Seattle-based supplier of distinctive, hand-fabricated, natural stone from China, now offers Reclaimed Grand Tortoise Limestone from the Yangzi River that dates back to before the Ming Dynasty [1368-1644]. Yellow Mountain StoneWorks initially discovered the limestone block in late 2008 and then set about reclaiming it.
Yellow Mountain StoneWorks Unearths Pre-Ming Dynasty Limestone
The reclaimed limestone block was part of an ancient revetment [structure through a body of water] on a tributary of the Yangzi River. The original structure was destroyed in a flood over 650 years ago and thestone lay buried in the riverbed up until this past year. The movement of the channel caused it to be exposed, and Yellow Mountain StoneWorks immediately recognized its value as reclaimed material.
LATICRETE, a global leader in the manufacturing of innovative systems for the installation of tile and stone, has enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial relationship with world-renowned mosaic artist Sonia King of Mosaic Works in Dallas, Texas. King’s latest project installed with LATICRETE® products, “Nebula Chroma” (think giant space cloud), is now the focal point of the multi-story main lobby in the newest tower of the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. The light-filled, three-story atrium creates a dynamic setting for Nebula Chroma, King’s 7’ x 17’ masterpiece that was awarded first prize in the “Design and Detail” category at the 2009 Spectrum Awards ceremony at Coverings in Chicago.
LATICRETE Products For Award-Winning Mosaic Mural
King’s Nebula Chroma features a huge variety of materials, including glass tiles from over 10 manufacturers, multiple layers of ceramic tile, agate slices, marble gems, beach glass, art glass, vintage mosaic glass and more. In all, over 200 different kinds of tile from 20 manufacturers were installed with LATICRETE installation products on this large-scale mural that represents King’s fourth completed mural wall at the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Her first four mosaic walls, also installed with LATICRETE products, all won Spectrum Awards as well, which are presented annually and sponsored by the Tile Council of North America, the National Tile Contractors Association, the Ceramic Tile Dealers Association, the Association of Ceramic Tile Manufacturers of Spain, and Assopiastrelle, the Italian tile association.
